Brookston

Paper maker

Third Street, Brookston, Indiana.

An adorable small Indiana town located in bucolic White County, Brookston (all two blocks of it) is home to Twin Rocker Handmade Paper. Founded by Kathryn and Howard Clark in 1971, it was a major player in the Renaissance of handmade paper-making. The mill has a wonderful retail shop (you have to walk through the manufacturing area to get there which is a great way to see the paper being made) featuring water color papers, stationary, invitations, book arts supplies, custom papers, art and craft supplies and much more.

There's also a large room filled with handmade paper to browse through. The Clarks, who moved to Brookston from San Francisco to live on the family farm, which belonged to Howard's grandparents, and the artisan staff make papers using the finest cotton rag recreating a process dating back to Europe centuries ago.

Top Notch Bar

Hand dipped onion rings, great steaks and freshly made hamburgers are just some of the menu items at the Top Notch Bar in Brookston, Try the Top Notch Special – steak, frog legs and catfish – for only $17 or that Indiana specialty – a cut that day and hand dipped tenderloin sandwich. And be sure to ask Bob the Bartender to share one of his many jokes.
