White County
Travel scenic White County, known for its rivers and woods, small quaint towns and historic sites. It is here that in 1926 Earl Spackman, using a horse and wagon, moved enough sand to create Ideal Beach on the shores of Lake Shafer. Now known as Indiana Beach, it's the biggest tourism draw around.
But White County, named after Colonel Isaac White who fought with William Henry Harrison, governor of the Northwest Territory and who died during the Battle of Tippecanoe in 1811, has much more to offer as well. So grab a map and hit the winding roads, breezing past verdant green patches of farmland, on a fun adventure.
Anson Wolcott House
Visit the Anson Wolcott House, one of two homes in White County listed in the National Register of Historic Places. Wolcott, an attorney who fought in the Civil War and who founded the town of Wolcott, moved to Indiana from New York after developing an interest in land development. His home, completed in the late 1860s, boasts five fireplaces, two parlors and an observatory atop the second floor and is open for tours.
Mark your calendars for the White County 4-H State Fair held each July. County fairs with their animal barns, Midways, fair food and craft areas are the perfect way to celebrate small town summers. Another great stop is Brookston, a charming small town with lots of great food.
