Historic Forks
An Intersection of Waterways and Lives
On the banks of the broad, swiftly moving Wabash River, Historic Forks of the Wabash in Huntington, Indiana conveys the centuries old history of this small plot of land and how so many cultures –Miami Indians, Redcoats from the Revolutionary War, Irish and German immigrants and even travelers on the Erie Canal which passed through here – intersected, sometimes for better, sometimes for worse.
Buildings
The historic site is a collection of buildings including a pioneer era school house reconstructed using squared logs from a local home built around 1870 and furnished in the style of prairie school from the 1880s, the Nuck Log House which Joseph and Margaret Nuck, German immigrants, built in 1847 and the Chief’s House, built around 1834 home to Miami Chiefs, Jean Baptiste Richardville and then later his son-in-law Francis Lafontaine.
