1870–1910: Turn-of-the-century Indiana

Indiana Glass Trail

With the peace in the wake of the civil war came real prosperity in Indiana. Farms like that preserved at Prophetstown, still made up a big part of the economy but the discovery of gas and the resultant boom led to a whole new range of industries, particularly glass, and celebrated along today’s Indiana Glass Trail

All this resulted in more fine homes; preserved at Historic Forks; the Benjamin Harrison Presidential Site

Mansions belonging to millionaires now house museums like the Howard County Museum; the Seiberling Mansion; and even the Rathskeller, the oldest restaurant in Indianapolis, located in the Indianapolis Athenaeum, an over-the-top a German Gothic Revival-style building that covers a city block.
