Prophetstown
Horse-powered farming & history
A real working farm and also a destination for those wanting to learn about early American life, Historic Prophetstown is located inside Prophetstown State Park, which is located where the Tippecanoe River flows into the Wabash, just a short way from Lafayette.
The park is named for the Native American village located between the rivers established by Tecumseh, who was Shawnee, and his brother Tenskwatawa (The Prophet) in 1808. This area was the scene of a great battle between the Shawnee and William Henry Harrison who would go on become President of the United States and whose home, Grouseland, in Vincennes is now a house museum.
There are events at Historic Prophetstown such as horse powered farming, hot rock cooking on the Woodland Indian Settlement, Draft Horse Clinics for those wanting to train their horses, farm house dinners cooked up in a 19th century kitchen, vegetables and fresh milk for sale, 122 acres of wetland and prairie for exploring.
Stop by to help with the farm chores and the feeding of the animals, attend a barn dance and embrace the agricultural life as it was lived more than a 100 years ago.
