Madison Architecture
19th Century Gems
Madison, an early 19th century port city nestled on the hills above the Ohio River, is the perfect place for those who love historic architecture.
This city, tucked in the southeast corner of the state, just across the waters from Kentucky, has the largest historic district in Indiana with more than 133 blocks on the National Register of Historic Places.
There's an Eastern seaboard influence here that dates back to the mid 1880s and thus some of the neighborhoods, with Federal style homes, is more reminiscent of Georgetown in Washington D.C. and Alexandria, Virginia than a small southern Indiana city.
Other architectural styles include the elaborate Second Empire, Italianate, Queen Anne and Gothic and Classical Revival.
