Take a drive through this northern Indiana city with its many beautiful historic homes including the Solomon Mier Manor, a grand Italian/Queen Anne Renaissance home built in 1899 by a Jewish entrepreneur who arrived in Ligonier as a peddler and became one of its leading citizens Ligonier was known for its religious tolerance and Mier encouraged other Jewish immigrants to settle here, many of whom built the magnificent houses that are still standing today.
Built in 1876 by Orlando Kimmel and set upon 12 lovely acres, the Italianate-style Kimmell House is a great place to spend the night. Kimmel kept meticulous notes and according to the owners of the inn, 96,650 bricks were used to build the 4000 square foot home and some of the original features of the house were central heat and indoor plumbing, unique luxuries at the time. The original woodwork and hardware are still intact today.
