Tombstone Trail

James-Schrock Cemetery, 1954 - Portage Township, Porter County, Indiana

Moss covered tombstones in cemeteries lined with bent trees whose bare branches coil and creak in the wind is a common theme for Halloween.

But the Tombstone Trail adds a historic twist and goes beyond the holiday. The trail, which follows U.S. 6 from the Ohio border for 85 miles as it passes through DeKalb County and Noble County, makes stops at cemeteries found in towns such as Waterloo, Corunna and Ligonier. Also on the journey are Huntington and Kosciusko County.

In Columbia City in Whitley County, the Blue River Cemetery, the oldest headstone belongs to Equilla Gradeless Pence, whose parents established the cemetery in 1851 on the hill where she played when young.
