Richmond
Charmingly Historic with Plenty to Do
Settled by Quakers who migrated from North Carolina and built a community on the banks of East Fork of the White River, Richmond's Quaker roots remain in such institutions as Earlham College, a small liberal arts school founded in 1847.
Gennett Records, a division of the Starr Piano Company, earned the city the nickname “cradle of recorded jazz at it was here that the earliest jazz recording of such notables as Jelly Roy Morton, Gene Autry, Lawrence Welk, Hoagy Carmichael, Louis Armstrong and Bix Beiderbecke cut records here. Though Starr, which opened in 1863 and closed in the 1950s is gone, Richmond remains a city of stately homes, astoundingly beautiful green spaces, shops, restaurants, coffee shops, and art galleries, making it a fun urban destination for all.
