Vevay
A Bit of Switzerland
A historic town on the Ohio River, Vevay was settled by Swiss immigrants back in the late 1700s. Around 1806, Jean Jacques harvested grapes for the first commercial winery in the U.S. Today, Vevay, with its lovely homes and downtown, retains the charms of its past.
The 4,000 miles of the Lewis and Clark National Historic Trail runs through Vevay and tells the complex story – both good and bad – as this country expanded westward.
In keeping with history, stay at the Pleasants Rose Inn, the 1881 mansion built by James K. and Charlotte Pleasants overlooks the Ohio River and is a gracious way to enjoy the luxuries of the past and the amenities of now. The three bedrooms on the second floor each feature its original coal-burning fireplace and mantel. Though now converted to natural gas, it is a step into the past as the rooms are decorated as they were back when the home was built.
