Kantō 関東地方/ Around Tōkyō

Mt.Fuji and autumn leaves on the shore of Lake Kawaguchi Yamanashi

The Kantō region is synonymous with Greater Tōkyō and contains about a third of Japan’s population. This section includes all this as well as a few other places of interest in range for a day or easy overnight trip.

Active types keen to do some walking may consider climbing Mt Fuji, though the season is somewhat short and you’d be best to allow a couple of days. Climbing overnight for sunrise is a top option.

There are good shorter, fun walks that combine exercise with cultural attractions such as shrines and temples at Mt Takao and Mt Mitake.

Hakone has walks and magnificent scenery, including views of Mt Fuji. Nikkō has the mesmerising Tōshōgū Shrine and great hiking around Lake Chuzenji.
