Nikkō 日光
Legendary shrine, nature & hiking
While many visit Nikkō - 125km north of Tōkyō - as a day trip, we suggest giving it a few days and staying around Lake Chuzenji.
Nikkō’s Tōshōgū Shrine is the stunning, highly decorated mausoleum of Tokugawa Ieyasu, the founder of the Tokugawa shogunate, which ruled over Japan and its isolation from the world for over 250 years until 1868. Visiting here is a must.
Outdoor enthusiasts will love the Oku-Nikkō area with its gorgeous scenery around Lake Chuzenji. The drive to get up there (and back) on the Irohazaka roads, winding roads with 48 hairpin turns, is a highlight.
Keen hikers will love the 6-7 hour return ascent and descent of Nanatai-san, offering brilliant views of the national park. There are shorter walks on the Senjogahara marshlands and plenty of hot springs in which to soak.
