Nakasendō walk 中山道
Fascinating 2-3hr walk along the old trail
Historically, the Nakasendō (’path through mountains’) was one of the two main routes that connected Edo (now Tōkyō) and Kyōto. It contrasted the other main transportation route of the time, the Tokaidō, which ran along the coast.
The trail between Magome and Tsumago is a well maintained section of the former Nakasendō; allow 2-3hrs to walk the 8km trail, though it’s more fun to take your time, especially at the two small, well-preserved historical towns.
There are small scale accommodation options in both towns if you’re keen to stay. The walk is so well set up that there is even a baggage forwarding service available through the two towns' tourist information centers.
