Kerama Islands 慶良間諸島
Beaches & snorkelling west of the main island
About 40km west of Okinawa’a main island are the Kerama-shotō, easily reached for a day or overnight trip from Naha. The island group became a national park in 2014.
We’re talking white sand beaches and clear blue waters, ideal for sunbathing, swimming, snorkeling and diving. From January to March, whale-watching is also on offer.
My top pick is Zamami-jima, where the best beaches - Furuzamami and Ama - are within walking distance from the village at the port.
Slightly further east and a shorter ferry ride from Naha is Tokashiki-jima though it’s further to get to the best beaches - Aharen and Tokashiku. Use the infrequent bus or rent some wheels here.
