Beaches & Surfing
The Japanese archipelago is made up of 6,852 island so it’s hardly surprising that there are going to be some great beaches.
While the country doesn’t spring to mind as a beach holiday destination, keep in mind that most Japanese view a trip to Okinawa as akin to a holiday in Hawai’i. There are popular beach resorts on Okinawa’s main island, but if you really want to find some lovely sand, head out to the Kerama Islands or further southwest to Ishigaki Island.
There are decent beaches not far from Tōkyō such as around Kamakura and the Izu Peninsula.
While Japanese surfers dream of heading to the North Shore of O’ahu, they’re also proud of surfing spots around Tōkyō and on Shikoku.
