Okinawa Main Island 沖縄本島
Resorts, war memorials & US military bases
Outside of its main city of Naha, Okinawa-hontō is set up with a number of beaches and resorts that cater mainly to Japanese holiday-makers.
The central part of the island is urbanised, with plenty of American military bases.
The southern tip and the northern half of the island are less densely populated.
The northern Yambaru region, with forested hills and small fishing and farming villages, became a national park in 2016 and World Heritage-listed in 2021.
