Kiyomizu-dera 清水寺
Popular temple with views of Kyōto
A World Heritage-listed site, the ‘Pure Water Temple, founded in 780, is one of the most celebrated temples of Japan. It’s in the wooded hills of eastern Kyoto and is famous for its wooden terrace that juts out from the main hall, high above the hillside, affording excellent views out over Kyōto.
Part of the fun is the approach to the temple in the atmospheric Higashiyama District. There are colourful shops and restaurants that have been catering to tourists and pilgrims for centuries. Products on sale range from local specialties such as pottery, sweets and pickles to the standard souvenirs.
Seasonally, the Kiyomizu-dera is also known for its colours, with numerous cherry and maple trees below the temple that erupt in colour in spring and autumn.
