Ponto-chō 先斗町

Walkway comes alive at night

Pontocho Alley, Kyoto, Japan

This narrow alley running from Shijo-dori to Sanjo-dori, one block west of Kamogawa River, makes for an excellent stroll, especially in the evening.

It’s packed with restaurants on both sides, with a wide range of dining options from inexpensive yakitori to pricey traditional and modern cuisine.

The restaurants along the eastern side of the alley overlook the Kamogawa River. From May to September, many of them build temporary platforms out over the water where patrons can dine out in the open air. Known as kawayuka, this type of dining is a great way to beat the summer heat and try some traditional local cuisine, while taking in the lively summer atmosphere.
