Trains
Super-efficient network
Japan has an enviably efficient rail network. Trains whip around cities and the country as a whole with clockwork precision, of which the Japanese are extremely proud.
Highly recommended: Consider getting a Japan Rail Pass (JR Pass) for virtually unlimited using of trains for 7, 14 or 21 days. These passes are an incredible bargain if you make the most of them.
Watch the video at Taking the train on how to use trains and subways in Japan.
Riding a shinkansen (bullet train) is a highlight of any trip to Japan.
Reminder: Once you’ve got your ticket and put it into the machine to go to your train platform, don’t lose it! - you’ll need it to get out at the other end.
Safety: Pickpockets on crowded commuter trains are extremely rare.... but there’s definitely a reason why there are women-only carriages on commuter trains during rush-hour times.
