Jigokudani 地獄谷野猿公苑

Legendary onsen-bathing snow monkeys

This is one of those enduring images of Japan - wild monkeys bathing in a natural hot spring surrounded by snow.

The Jigokudani Monkey Park in Nagano Prefecture is inhabited by Japanese Macaques, which have become known as ‘snow monkeys’.

While the area is the monkeys’ natural habitat, take note that the onsen pool they gather in is man-made and they’re presence is often encouraged by bribes of food from park wardens. In the warmer months, the monkeys can require quite a bit of coaxing to even get into the onsen.

Also take note that they’re not always there. These are wild monkeys and while food from park wardens is enticing, it may not always do the business. Ask if the monkeys are there before buying your ticket.

Also, you’ll only get that snow shot when there’s snow around - think December to March. Outside of snow times, there’s a fair bit of concrete around to ruin your photo.

There’s a Snow Monkey livecam to check what’s there.

You’ll need to walk through forest for about 30mins to get to the park.
