Jardines Botánicos
A shady retreat in the heart of the city
Nestled alongside the Parque del Retiro, the botanical gardens provide another delightful escape from the traffic-choked streets of the city centre.
Initially opened back in 1781 by Carlos III to showcase plants from across the Spanish empire, the gardens have since been restored and are now home to a wonderful collection of flora, including a fascinating display of cacti and tropical plants in the glass pavilion.
Plaza de Murillo 2, Metro Atocha.
Daily: 10am-dusk
Entry: €6 for full visit including the pavilion; €3 for students, over-65s; under-18s free. Free Tues from 10am-1pm.
