Outdoors
There are plenty of places where you can escape the frenzied activity of the Madrid streets and take a break from the sights.
Relax
Top of the list for most madrileños is El Retiro, once the grounds of a royal palace and now the playground for many of the city's inhabitants. Alongside are the beautifully tranquil Jardines Botánicos.
Also sedate are the manicured lawns and English-style gardens of the underused Campo del Moro or the shady paths of the Parque del Oeste.
Get Active
The former royal hunting estate of Casa del Campo provides an altogether wilder backdrop; within it lie the city zoo and the thrills and spills of an attraction park.
Otherwise all the city parks are perfect for jogging, while the city's outdoor swimming pools provide the perfect antidote to the soaring summer temperatures.
