Royal Madrid
The historical core of Madrid contains the remnants of the old medieval city which is known as Madrid de los Austrias after the homeland of the Habsburg royal family which ruled the country in its heyday.
The Bourbons supplanted the Austrians at the start of the 18th century and proceeded to leave a legacy of elegant squares, plenty of greenery, fascinating churches and monasteries around the extravagant Royal Palace and the opera house, making them a key area to explore.
Royal Madrid contains some of the most evocative sights in the city including Plaza Mayor and Plaza de la Villa and it doesn't take too much imagination to transport yourself back to the sixteenth century as you wander this area's maze of streets.
A healthy sprinkling of cafés, bars, restaurants and even clubs throughout the district help add to its appeal.
