Plaza de la Villa
Historic architecture in an evocative plaza
An evocative plaza containing some of the oldest buildings in Madrid. The fifteenth century Torre y Casa de Los Lujanes is where French king Francis I is believed to have been imprisoned by Emperor Charles V after the Battle of Pavia in 1525.
Adjacent is the Plateresque Casa de Cisneros, built by the nephew of the infamous inquisitor Cardinal Cisneros in the early sixteenth century. The remaining side of the square is filled by the Casa de Villa, the former town hall which dates from the mid-seventeenth century.
