Catedral de la Almudena
Madrid's grand cathedral
Although work began on it back in 1883, the finishing touches were only added to the cathedral in 2004. Grand on the outside, a little underwhelming on the inside, it still merits a visit.
Look out for the gaudy ceiling decor and the sixteenth century altarpiece in the Almudena chapel. The adjacent museum houses some of the cathedral's treasures and from here you can gain access to the dome with some great views over the city.
More atmospheric than the cathedral itself is the colonnaded crypt (accessed on Calle Mayor) with its shadowy chapels.
