Monasterio de las Descalzas Reales
Hidden treasure of an ancient monastery
Tucked away behind a rather anonymous brick façade in the middle of the shopping area close to Sol, the Monasterio de las Descalzas Reales (Monastery of the Barefoot Royal Ladies) is one of the hidden jewels of the city.
Made into a convent by the daughter of Holy Roman Emperor Charles V, Juana de Austria in 1559, the monasterio is home to a wonderful collection of paintings, sculptures and tapestries, brought her by the titled ladies who became the nuns but were reluctant to part with their worldly goods.
Another stand-out feature is the wonderful frescoed main staircase and the adjoining two-floored cloister.
