Jemaa el Fna foodstalls
Eating in the Jemaa el Fna (d; $)
Eating at the Jemaa el Fna’s food stalls is a wonderfully atmospheric Marrakesh experience, and although it’s a bit rough and ready, you really can’t beat a meal – or at least a harira soup – in the square.
The food stalls set up at dusk, and soon billows of smoke are wafting up from them as they cook.
Some stallholders can be pushy and may try to pad the bill, and they don’t have the best washing-up facilities. But all stalls should now have menus with prices, and standards of hygiene have improved somewhat in recent years.
Do however check your bill carefully, and note that many stalls play little tricks like putting bread, olives and water in front of you and then charging for them even if you don’t touch them.
