Les Enfants de Michelin
Rubber tyres "upcycled" as fashion
Les Enfants de Michelin is a shop that sells black rubber fashion items and accessories made from recycled car and bike tyres. They're a bit fetishy, but they're unusual, and you won't find anything like them anywhere else.
In fact, Les Enfants de Michelin is the latest development of an old idea. Long before recycling became big in the West, a couple of shops at the southern end of Rue Riad Zitoun el Kedim were selling buckets and sandals for hammams (bathhouses) made out of recycled tyres. The shop at #50 still does.
Then a few enterprising souls had the idea of making things like picture frames and cylindrical tuffets from the same tyres, and selling them to tourists. The shop at #97 still does.
