Souk Semarine
The main road into the souks - سوق السمارين
Souk Semarine, literally "the brokers' souk", is the most direct route from the Jemaa el Fna into the Medina's main souks.
With gates at each end that can be shut at night, Souk Semarine nowadays hosts some quite upmarket shops, many specializing in antiques, jewellery or fine clothing. The souk is covered with a slatted iron roof – formerly cane, now replaced with iron to prevent fire.
Souk Semarine starts on Souk Qassabine (also spelt Kassabine or Guessabine), which runs from the northeast corner of the Jemaa el Fna, across the top of Mechoui Alley and the olive souk, to Place Bab Fteuh (an open space just past the Café Argana).
At its northern end, Souk Semarine changes its name to Souk Nejjarine before splitting into Souk Attarine and Souk el Kebir.
Shops on Souk Semarine include El Abidi Nasser Eddine and the Belkabir and Duniya Patisseries.
