Moulay Larbai
Fancy Marrakshi mirrors
Moulay Larbai is the man in the souk who first started making mirrors framed with mosaics of stained glass. His are the original, and still the best, and he makes them by hand in his shop.
Call by at his shop (on Souk el Kchachbia), and you’ll almost certainly find Moulay Larbai hard at work. He doesn’t just make mirrors, but also tables, chests, boxes and lamps. Some are made with little pieces of mirror, some with pieces of stained glass, some with both.
The richest-coloured glass is known as Iraqi glass. It’s the glass used to make the coloured window panes in places like the Bahia Palace. It’s also the most expensive type of coloured glass, but it’s worth asking Moulay Larbai for items made with Iraqi glass, as it’s so much better than any other kind. His Iraqi glass lampshades in particular are intensely colourful.
