Avenue Mohammed V
Marrakesh's main artery - شارع محمد الخامس
Avenue (or Boulevard) Mohammed V is Marrakesh’s main artery, linking the centre of the Medina with the centre of the Ville Nouvelle. It’s named after the current king’s grandfather, who led Morocco to independence in 1956.
Previously it was named Avenue Maréchal Lyautey after France's colonial governor, whose architect Henri Prost laid it out in the nineteen-teens.
Avenue Mohammed V starts at Arset el Bilk, between the Koutoubia and the Jemaa el Fna. From there it heads northwest, past Moulay Abdeslam Cyber-Park, the Ensemble Artisanal and the town hall (Hôtel de Ville), to exit the Medina at Bab Nkob (not to be misspelt), which isn’t so much a gate as a breach in the city wall, created for the Avenue when it was built.
