Mama Afrika
Friendly 24hr reggae café (b,l,d: $)
There's something of a beach vibe to Mama Afrika. Maybe it's the bamboo frontage or the reggae sounds, but either way, it's got a definite Caribbean feel about it.
To a large extent this is deliberate. Their dishes have names like “rasta chicken” and “reggae fish” (both 60dh). A chicken salad sandwich goes by “one love” (40dh), and the shrimp salad’s called a “Kingston crevette” (50dh).
And then there's the music, which is mostly (but not entirely) old-school roots reggae, with a few African tunes thrown in.
Mama Afrika doesn’t serve alcohol, but they do a good line in alcohol-free cocktails, including a “mamango” and a “coconut kiss”.
On top of that, it’s open day and night, always super-laid-back and friendly, a great place to stop for a juice or a coffee. If you’re about for breakfast, they’ll do you one for just 30dh.
And if you shut your eyes, it really isn’t hard to imagine yourself on a coral-sand beach lined with coconut trees....
