Zevaco's filling station

Petrol station by Morocco's Niemeyer - محطة الوقود زيفاكو

Station service [1958] arch Jean-François Zevaco

Fans of modern architecture may care to give a second glance to the Shell filling station on Avenue Yakoub el Mansour and Avenue Prince Moulay Abdallah, just round the corner from the Majorelle Garden.

Erected in 1958, the filling station was designed by Moroccan-born French architect Jean-François Zevaco. A modernist who worked in his time with Le Corbusier, Zevaco is often compared to Brazil’s Oscar Niemeyer, who certainly influenced him.

Zevaco liked working with concrete, using bold, sweeping curves. Most of his important work was in Casablanca and Agadir, but here in Marrakesh this simple filling station with its elegant roof shows how his ideas can apply very gracefully to an everyday working utility.
