1956–present: Modern Times

Since independence, Marrakesh has expanded somewhat, particularly out to the west, with people moving out of the Medina into new neighbourhoods. Starting with hippy travellers in the 1960s, tourism has gradually become a mainstay of the city's economy.

Interesting modern buildings in Marrakesh include Jean-François Zevaco's modest 1958 modernist filling station, and Charles Boccara's more grandiose 2001 Théâtre Royal.
