Zócalo
The capital's main square
Once an important Aztec ceremonial center, today Mexico City’s main square (the largest in Latin America) continues to play an important role in hosting key events such as Day of the Dead, Independence Day festivities, massive concerts and other live performances.
Iconic sights on the square, also known as the Plaza de la Constitución, include the imposing Palacio Nacional (the presidential palace that’s home to spectacular Diego Rivera murals), the Catedral Metropolitana (Mexico City’s main cathedral) and Templo Mayor, an Aztec temple and onsite museum.
A marching band ceremony takes place every day at 8am and 6pm when the square’s giant flag is raised and lowered. The Zócalo also serves as a popular gathering spot for protesters, Aztec dancers and spiritual cleansers.
