El Ángel de la Indepdencia

The Angel of Independence monument

The Angel of Independence

For more than a century El Ángel has served as an important gathering spot for protesters and it’s also the preferred roundabout to celebrate football championships.

The 45-meter (147-foot) monumental column is topped with a gilded victory goddess, while a mausoleum down below holds the remains of more than a dozen heroes of the Mexican Independence.

Over decades, El Ángel has been damaged by strong earthquakes and gradual sinking and yet it still stands tall as one of the capital’s most iconic symbols.
