McCord Museum
Canadiana Treasure Trove

Occupying another of the Golden Square Mile’s handsome limestone buildings the McCord Museum (Musée McCord d’Histoire Canadienne) is all about Canadian History thanks to a trove of treasures left to it by wealthy local collectors.
Its collection is immense, with around a million artefacts to play with. Yet the building is relatively small, so the museum has to be active and imaginative in the way it showcases things.
The small permanent exhibition Wearing our Identity is all about local First Nations clothing and accessories, gathering together some impressive bead-work and costumes to look at the culture and art involved.
Otherwise, look out for exhibitions that reveal something of Montreal’s past. There’s plenty in the collection on this, particularly several thousand photos by William Notman depicting Montreal from 1840s to the 1930s.
