Mile End
Hip central neighbourhood
The bustle in Mile End is a notch below that of The Plateau, but this is still one of Montreal's hippest central residential neighbourhoods.
Jewish & Italian roots
Despite a decades of evolution, there's still a noticeably Jewish and Italian flavour here. Long-standing bagel shops and cafes from each community do good business and haven't yielded to the forces of gentrification that transformed its the arterial street The Main nearer Downtown.
Galleries, Music & Accommodation
There's definitely a hipster element in the neighbourhood too, with art galleries and an independent music scene flourishing here.
All this helps make Mile End as good a neighbourhood as any to look for homestay accommodation: despite having no real sights, it's close enough to be convenient for the centre, but far enough away to make life more relaxed and finding parking less of a hassle.
