Sandfly Bay Walk
Wildlife on Otago Peninsula (1.5-2hrs return)
This is a fun family walk out on the east coast of Otago Peninsula that takes in sandy dunes, a broad sandy beach and the potential to meet local wildlife. Cross a flattish farm paddock from the carpark at the bottom of Seal Point Rd, then tumble down the sandy track and through the dunes before emerging on the beach.
Sandfly Bay has a small colony of yellow-eyed penguins/hoiho. If you encounter a penguin, keep well away and crouch down. If they feel threatened they will not come ashore.
Fur seals/kekeno and sea lions/rāpoka haul out on the rocks and beach and wallow in the sand. They may look placid but are powerful predators and can be very dangerous if they are approached too closely.
