Tunnel Beach Track
Dunedin adventure for families (1-2hrs)
The Tunnel Beach Track is a great short walk, enjoyable for families. Kids love the man-made tunnel, the beach and scrambling around on the exposed headland. Lying 7km southwest of central Dunedin, you’ll need your own wheels to get to the carpark at the end of Tunnel Beach Rd.
There’s a reasonably steep descent on a good track down to a dramatic limestone arch and a tunnel of 72 steps that civic father John Cargill had built to give access to Tunnel Beach for his family in 1876. Cargill’s daughter drowned here and swimming is considered dangerous. Lots of cliff edges too, so keep kids under control.
