Nelson
With a population of 47,000, Nelson is the biggest city in the region and has the enviable reputation as being the sunniest and one of the most liveable cities in New Zealand. With sophisticated arts and culinary scenes, it’s all here in a gorgeous natural environment to be enjoyed by local and visitor alike.
History buffs will enjoy Founder’s Heritage Park, with its replica historic village, and Nelson Provincial Museum, with cultural heritage and natural history exhibits. The Suter Art Gallery has changing exhibitions, theatrical performances and films.
Kahurangi, Nelson Lakes and Abel Tasman national parks are all within easy reach of town, making Nelson a great base for exploring the north of the South Island.
Nelson Airport is 5km west of and handy to the city. Flights wing in from the country’s main centres.
