Whale Watch Kaikoura

Near-guaranteed whale sightings

The boat

The big operator in town, Whale Watch Kaikoura is owned and operated by the Ngāti Kuri people of Kaikōura, a sub-tribe of the South Island's larger Ngāi Tahu tribe. They operate a variety of trips and have earned a solid reputation for excellent informational and successful whale watching trips.

That said, no-one can control the weather, so give yourself a day or two’s flexibility as no-one wants to be out there looking for whales in foul weather.

You can also watch whales from the air with a helicopter or plane flight. It’s pricier, but you’ll see the whole whale. Check your options at Kaikoura i-SITE Visitor Information Centre.
