Tane Mahuta & Waipou Forest
Visit 'the lord of the forest'
Waipoua and its surrounding forests are the largest remaining tract of native forest in Northland. This is the land of the monster kauri trees, known for growing to over 50m in height, with trunk girths up to 16m, and living for over 2,000 years.
Tane Mahuta, the country's largest living kauri tree, known as ‘the lord of the forest’, is only a five-minute walk off SH12, which runs through the Waipoua Forest. This short, easy walk is suitable for buggies and children.
You’ll want your own wheels to get here. Dargaville is 65 km to the south and Omapere is 18 km to the north.
