Kapiti Island
Predator-free bird sanctuary
If you’re driving up or down the Kapiti Coast, Kapiti Island is that gorgeous, long, offshore island to the west. A protected nature reserve since 1897, and predator-free since 1998, it’s home for a number of threatened bird species such as kākā, kōkako, takahē and hihi. Wander tracks fringed with dense forest or climb the 521m peak for panoramic views.
You can only go here with an approved tour operator. Departures are from Paraparaumu Beach, which can be accessed from Wellington by train.
Kapiti Island Nature Tours offers day tours and an overnight kiwi spotting tour.
