Auckland Wine
Auckland’s best known wineries are on Waiheke Island in the Hauraki Gulf, but there also three other areas known for their wineries:
Matakana - an hour north of Auckland are the pretty rolling hills of Matakana. Vines are relatively young, but produce good Pinot Gris, Syrah and Cabernet.
West Auckland - NZ's oldest wine families settled here nearly 100 years ago. Old Chardonnay and Merlot vines produce excellent wines.
Clevedon - boutique wines, particularly Bordeaux Blend reds, are beginning to attract attention here, 40 minutes southeast of the city.
Our picks:
-
Villa Maria - this is a treat if you’re stuck at Auckland Airport. Villa Maria has tastings and tours just 4km from the airport, including a 2km vineyard walking trail.
-
Babich Wines - out west in Henderson.
-
Heron's Flight - NZ’s only vineyard exclusively growing the Italian Sangiovese and Dolcetto grape varieties - Matakana.
-
Puriri Hills - 398 North Road, Clevedon
