Haka & Hangi

Māori food & culture

Fearsome warriors (1)

An extremely popular form of evening entertainment for visitors in Rotorua is the Haka & Hangi experience.

Though heavily commercialised, it’s still a good introduction to Māori customs and traditions. It usually involves kapa haka (traditional performing arts) and a hangi (feast cooked in the earth).

Many of the big hotels offer on-site packages, but the most authentic experience is likely to be had at Tamaki Māori Village (this entry’s map location), Mitai Māori Village, or at Te Puia.
