Zealandia (Te Māra a Tāne)
Predator-fenced urban eco-sanctuary
Famed as the first fully-fenced urban eco-sanctuary in the world, Zealandia is effectively a predator-free island on an island. The 225ha bird sanctuary is a ground-breaking conservation project that protects over 40 rare native wildlife species and was named one of the world’s 100 Greatest Places of 2019 by TIME magazine.
More than 140 rare Little Spotted Kiwi live here and can be seen on night tours of the sanctuary.
Wellington has found a ‘halo effect’ from Zealandia, with the whole region benefiting with more native birdlife flying around. Zealandia is only a few kilometres from the heart of the city.
