Huaraz & The Central Sierra
This part of Peru has the most hikes and some of the most intense mountain climbing in South America.
The hub for the region is the sizeable mountain town of Huaraz, which will undoubtedly become your basecamp for an exploration of the region. It’s here that you’ll find all the guides and gear you need to strike out on your own or join a day tour or organised trek.
The Callejón de Huaylas is the valley that stretches northwest from the town of Huaraz.
The eastern side of the valley is lined with the Cordillera Blanca, which has about 30 peaks at or over 6,000 meters (20,000 feet). The western is flanked by the Cordillera Negra, which is lower and lacks the glaciers of the Cordillera Blanca.
