PEN & USD
US dollars commonly used for some tours & tickets
The Peruvian Nuevo Sol (PEN) is an unstable currency, which has led many tour operators to list prices in dollars (USD). Most will accept payment in PEN, but they will use an exchange rate that is favorable to them and often you can find a better exchange rate at currency exchange shops. You will usually get a better deal if you can pay tour or travel agencies in cash USD.
The Peruvian government has licensed the PeruRail and InkaRail trains to a private company. The busses that run from Aguas Calientes up to Machu Picchu are also licensed to a private company. Both of these charge prices in USD, though they will also accept PEN. However, archeological sites like Machu Picchu are still run by the Peruvian government and charge prices in PEN. No archeological sites accept USD, though guides and tour agencies often charge in USD. See the section on visiting Machu Picchu for more information.
The photo above is the old bills, which started to be replaced in 2022. They are still accepted everywhere in Peru, as are the new bills, below. The old bills and the new bills are both called Peruvian Nuevo Soles.
