Temple of the Moon

Best hike above Cusco (30mins; 1.5 mi)

The Temple of the Moon is also called Amaru Marka Wasi, in Quechua. It’s not a typical temple in that it’s not built. It’s carved into natural caves under an outcropping of limestone bedrock. The top and sides were also carved with steps though they have been badly weathered in the past five centuries.

This outcropping of limestone bedrock is covered with carvings on all sides, across the entire top and in the caves. There is only one cave currently open to the public but inside you’ll see niches carved into the walls that are still used today. On most days you’ll see offerings of coca leaves, flowers and incense in the niches.

This is my favorite hike that leaves from town. It’s about 2km (1.2miles), which is a half hour hike from Plazoleta San Blas. If you’re new to high altitude, expect it to take almost an hour.

You can get here walking uphill from the San Blas church. It is all uphill, so take it slowly. I don’t recommend doing this your first day at altitude. If you’re a fast walker, it takes half an hour. If you’re new to altitude &/or stop often for photos, it can take up to an hour.
